ASU Career Development Center launches "Boot Camp" to help students succeed in a tough economy

On Wednesday April 8, 2010 the Career Development Center at Appalachian State University offered its first “Job Search Boot Camp.” The program featured “circuit training” options wherein students could attend multiple mini-workshops throughout the day on topics such as, “Interviewing Skills,” “Networking,” “Is Your Resume Killing Your Job Options?” and “Creating a Plan B: It’s Not Living in Your Parent’s Basement.” Career Counselors were be available from 10am to 4pm in the Student Union to review resumes and answer questions students have about job searching and graduate school. Programs were open to all majors and levels (undergraduate and graduate) but were especially useful for students graduating in the next few semesters.

The idea for this unique program came from research that showed students were waiting until the end of the semester to think about career options. “We encourage students to come to the Career Development Center early and often, but we also want to be available for students as they finalize their plans for the summer or for post-graduation,” Director Marjorie Ellis commented. “We know it is a tough job market right now and we want to help students be strategic and flexible in their career plans.”
