In today’s economy students are expressing increased interest in Federal government jobs and internships. UNC Greensboro’s Career Services Center (CSC) has responded by offering pertinent workshops throughout the year on Student Opportunities with the Federal Government and Writing Federal Resumes and KSA’s. As follow-up, students are encouraged to meet individually with a career counselor to consider how their strengths and experiences match with internship and career opportunities inside and outside the government, plan job/internship search strategies, gain assistance with resumes and practice interviewing skills.
During the fall semester, CSC hosted a speaker from the Federal Government sponsored through the Annenberg Public Service Speakers Bureau. The presenter described her challenging job with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She encouraged listeners to explore internships and career opportunities with the Federal government which fit their academic interests and personal values.
CSC also hosted the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) on campus. The WRP connects federal sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs. During two days in February, UNCG students with disabilities, along with students from nearby campuses, interviewed with the WRP representative at UNCG. Both UNCG students and those from nearby campuses prepared for their interviews by attending CSC information sessions, including two that featured a student who had completed a summer job gained through the WRP. Additionally, the UNCG students met with a career counselor to discuss their goals and capabilities, critique a resume and practice interviewing skills in a mock interview – skills they will carry with them for the future.
As UNCG Career Services plans for 2010-2011, programs informing students about Federal government jobs and internships will continue to be a part of the services and programs offered.
