    UNC School of the Arts Promotes Collaboration, Economic Development through Multi-Campus Partnerships

    UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA) is a key player in a new initiative to improve the economy in the Triad – and foster collaboration among other educational institutions. 

    UNCSA Chancellor John Mauceri and Wake Forest University President Nathan Hatch are co-chairing the University Transformation Team (UTT), a collaborative effort of the presidents and chancellors of the 11 four-year colleges and universities in the Piedmont Triad region. After a year of planning among the schools, UTT campuses have agreed to work together – and focus their various strengths – to transform the Triad’s creative economy.

    Center for Design Innovation

    The UNC Board of Governors established the Center for Design Innovation (CDI) in 2005 as an inter-institutional research center, to conduct programs involving design related to digital technologies. CDI is a response to findings of a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy conducted for the Northwest Piedmont area of North Carolina. This study encouraged the development of entities to catalyze, facilitate and accelerate growth of the region’s existing creative enterprises cluster. The goal is to mitigate the rapid disappearance of employment in the tobacco, textiles and furniture industries.

    In addition to CDI’s founding schools – the UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA), Winston- Salem State University (WSSU), and Forsyth Technical Community College (FT) – CDI’s emerging project portfolio involves Wake Forest University and other education and business entities nationally and internationally.
