2013 UNC External Affairs Meeting

UNC External Affairs Meeting
Communications Council, Federal Relations Council, State Relations Council
Monday, January 14, 2013-Wednesday, January 16, 2013
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

As Professor Jim Johnson (Kenan-Flagler School of Business) says “the only thing we can be certain about in this world is change and uncertainty.”  And, higher education is no exception.  Our work at the University is increasingly complex and requires us to think differently about how to do our jobs.  As communications, federal relations, and state relations professionals, we are called upon to communicate the University’s strategic direction, goals and priorities to various audiences.  Our work requires us to coordinate messages with our colleagues so that we may present an effective, united message to our respective audiences.  We can accomplish more if we work together.  And, while embracing and leveraging our system connections has tremendous value, we cannot neglect the parochial needs of individual campuses.

The Federal, State and Communications teams at UNC General Administration have assembled a two-day meeting with several goals in mind.  First, we have heard from many of you that you want to sharpen your communication and negotiation skills and learn more about North Carolina’s changing population and how this will affect our future students.  The agenda reflects this focus but also dedicates time to diving deeper on some key policy issues at the federal and state levels.   We also hope that an intense two-day meeting will permit us all to make linkages that we wouldn’t ordinarily make and to develop more meaningful relationships with one another.  We are going to need each other in the coming months!

We hope you will join us for what we believe to be an excellent opportunity for professional growth.  And, by leveraging our system faculty assets and staying local to North Carolina we have been able to keep the cost affordable when compared to other external opportunities.  We look forward to your joining us.
